MOSSFEST - The prom will be holding a number of benefit gigs over the coming months - Check our events calendar for details. We hope for your support. Thanks from all @Prom!
Many of you may know that Martin has been fighting cancer since the shock of his diagnosis last September. Following two operations and intensive chemotherapy he is doing well, but the disease is not expected to go away with these conventional methods.
Martin and his partner Chrissie Hammonds are very talented musicians and song writers who have been great supporters of The PROM. Back in 1999 when I took over they were already a key part of its great music scene. Since then they have given me and The PROM fantastic support, provided great gigs as well as often stepping in when bands cancel at the last moment. As resident musician and entertainments manager Martin is the expert of the sound desk and was key in getting the camera and screens off the ground. Even with his illness his energy and enthusiasm is humbling – try stopping him getting up and playing at the open mic nights and giving it his all despite the poisonous chemicals in his body.
There is however a treatment (Selective Internal Radiation Therapy), extensively used outside the UK, with trials here supported by the Bobby Moore Fund. Martin has been refused funding by the Bristol Primary Care Trust claiming that it is ‘experimental’. You can imagine that he has very choice words for their approach to this vital option. Not one to give up, he has however managed to arrange a self-funding option which will cost £20,000.
On hearing this, many local musicians and friends have immediately come out in force to help raise the funds in any way they can, donating gig fees, recording tracks for a CD compilation, putting on events both at The PROM and elsewhere. They are going under the banner of Mossfest. I am sure many of you will help support these events by your presence. Just come along, pay the entrance fee or some change in the jug as for any other gig. We are not asking for donations, although none will be refused.
We will be publicising Mossfest events in The PROM as we all help Martin to raise the funds for this potentially life-saving treatment.
Thanks,
John Rosetti & all at the Prom
