In 1998, researchers at Bristol University allegedly isolated a previously unknown DNA chemical compound. Harmonia Aural Nowai Kinki or the HANK gene, as it is known, causes people to constantly listen to Americana Country Roots music. It is thought that this rogue element may have been introduced by American soldiers based at Filton in World War Two. The HANK gene would go some way to explaining why four guys from Bristol called Dave, seem so enthusiastically hot-wired to this much underrated genre.
Their set includes works by Gram Parsons, John Prine, Randy Newman and Tom Waits as well as a good smattering of their own songs, mostly about Movie Star's trousers, dying on the toilet and lingerie. The Shrinks are Bristol's best kept secret. Catch them if you can.
